SHOES, FIRST IMPRESSIONS, CHOCOLATE, & CHARACTER TRAITS

I read a study in the Journal of Research in Personality (yes, I can go all psychology nerd when the mood strikes) that basically stated people can tell a lot about another person based on their shoes.  Shoes can make a significant first impression.  People can infer personality characteristics of the wearers of the shoes. The shoe wearers don shoes that present a public image, what they want others to think of them.  Your average shoe observer picks up on the image the shoe wearer is conveying.  But, hold on to your red-soled Christian Louboutins!  The shoe observer may be fooled.  The shoe wearer’s image may be different from their real personalities

Now that I’ve shocked you, I wouldn’t spend much time being overly worried about being shoe-deceived.  The study goes on to say most people are honest about their shoes, even if it’s totally subconscious on their part.  So unless a shoe owner purposefully generates a deceptive image, shoes can be a reliable source of information.

Now let’s extend this snippet of scientific information to our story characters or even our friends and family (just for fun).  What personality type would wear the super-high leopard-print platform stilettos?  (The trophy wife two doors down?)  Who’d wear the sensible orthopedic shoes with one inch heels that only come in black or brown?  (Aunt Mabel?) What type of personality would buy edible chocolate shoes?  Yes.  I said chocolate.

There’s a confectionary shop that makes delectable shoe-shaped goodies.  I’ve heard of drinking champagne from a shoe (usually a woman’s slipper, but boots can hold way more booze, just saying). But I wonder if a hero has ever said to his heroine, “I want to lick your shoes, my darling, and nibble on your chocolate covered toes!?”  Well, probably, but not in most books.

What kind of shoes would your favorite characters wear (if the author hasn’t revealed this oh-so-important piece of information)?  Well, since becoming informed of the importance of shoes in first impressions and outward manifestations of personality traits, I will now and forever be curious about characters’ footwear.  Even in the distant past when fairytales were written, there were some perceptive writers who understood the importance of shoes.  Cinderella anyone?

Don’t be surprised if my story characters suddenly start noticing shoes, buying shoes, talking about shoes, and generally start being astonishingly shoe-centric.  Then again, I may try to cleverly insert shoe-talk in very subtle ways into my stories, which only you, the knowledgeable observer, will now recognize.
